This article explores the role of principals leading public lower secondary schools in Italy and facing the «new» challenge of students with a migratory background. Data drawn from the 2018 edition of Talis (Teaching and Learning International Survey) reveals that practices aimed at promoting diversity and equity are more common in schools where most students are in a weaker socio-economic condition rather than in schools where immigrant-origin students are more numerous.

Abstract
