Enzymic synthesis of poly(PDL-co-butylene-co-succinate) copolymers with various unit ratios has been achieved via terpolymn. of di-ethylene succinate (DES) with 1,4-butanediol (BD) and pentadecalactone (PDL). The compn. of the copolymers was readily controlled by adjusting the monomer feed ratio. NMR spectroscopy analyses indicate that the synthesized terpolymers have near random distributions of PDL, butylene, and succinate repeat units linked by ester groups along the polymer chain. Irresp. of compn., all terpolymers are highly cryst. (melting enthalpy > 60J/g), Their melting temp. depends on compn. and reaches a min. at 35mol% of PDL units. DSC and WAXS results suggest that poly(w-pentadecalactone-co-butylene-co-succinate) terpolymers behave as an iso-dimorphic system.
