At the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th century, a series of texts flourished in Europe called methods and it was aimed at teaching L2 or FL. Generally, the origin of these methods began with the publication - by an author - of a volume and, if it was a commercial success, it was taken as a model for other similar works. In this article - which studies only the tradition of the Spanish methods for Italian speakers in the 19th century, we characterize the genre we call method, we consider new possible tools for its study, we observe those tools in action in five Spanish grammar books for Italian speakers (Gómez dated 1864, Richeri dated 1871, Pizarro dated 1873, Pavia dated 1894 and Pavia dated 1895). Finally, we propose a new methodological perspective for the study of didactics in such methods based on didactic sequences, text blocks, typographical units and textual genres of the content.

Abstract
