Roca Archaeological Survey: Inquadramento e primissimi risultati

Through the millennia, mobility has dramatically affected lives and trajectories of social change, profoundly influencing humans and the way they inhabited the landscape all over the world. Despite the acknowledgement of the periodic recurrence throughout history of the movement of people, the importance of the past and its memory in shaping the social responses to mobility has been rarely highlighted. Through the study of a case study located in Salento, an area of southern Italy where population mobility is documented over a very long period of time to the present day, this project sets out to explore via a combination of an intensive diachronic archaeological survey and an ethnographic investigation, the crucial nexus between mobility, landscape and memory.

Nel corso dei millenni, la mobilità ha enormemente influito sulle vite e sulle linee direttrici che determinano i cambiamenti sociali, toccando profondamente le persone e il modo in cui esse hanno popolato i territori di tutto il mondo. Nonostante tali spostamenti siano una caratteristica storica costante, raramente è stata evidenziata l’importanza del passato e della memoria nel disegnare la risposta sociale alla mobilità. Attraverso un caso-studio situato nel Salento, un’area del sud Italia dove il movimento di genti è documentato per un periodo, che arriva fino ai giorni nostri, e tramite la combinazione di un’intensa indagine archeologica di superficie e uno studio etnografico, questo progetto si propone di esplorare il nesso cruciale tra mobilità, territorio e memoria, in un ampio range cronologico.
