Et in Arcadia ego : Emilio Cecchi’s photo books · The article focuses on Et in Arcadia ego, Emilio Cecchi book of reportage, inspired by his tour of Greece in the summer of 1934. The essay continues a research into literature and vision, first started by myself in an article about Messico and Emilio Cecchi’s photographs. Once again, I went to see the unpublished negatives held at the Contemporary Archives of Gabinetto Vieusseux : about two hundred pictures that document the writer’s journey in Crete and mainland Greece and that are the equivalent of his Taccuini as prefatory material. In addition, the paper reflects on the layout of the book, the variants in the different editions, and Cecchi’s influence on Brandi and Arbasino.
L’articolo si concentra sul libro-reportage di Emilio Cecchi, Et in Arcadia ego, nato da una visita della Grecia nell’estate del 1934. Lo studio prosegue una ricerca su letteratura e visualità inaugurata da chi scrive con un articolo dedicato a Messico e alle foto scattate da Emilio Cecchi. Anche in questo caso ci si è avvalsi dell’esame dei negativi inediti conservati all’Archivio Contemporaneo del Gabinetto Vieusseux: circa duecento immagini che documentano il percorso dello scrittore tra Creta e Grecia continentale, e che rappresentano l’equivalente dei Taccuini come avantesto dell’opera. Si ragiona inoltre sull’impianto del libro, sulle varianti tra le diverse edizioni, e sull’influenza esercitata da Cecchi su Brandi e Arbasino.
