Focusing on the cases of The Deuce (HBO, 2017-19) and The End of the F***ing World (Netflix, 2018-), the current essay aims, on the one hand, at investigating the treatment of transgression and explicit content in two TV series that, in different ways, challenge the narrative and aesthetic canons of television representa- tion, as well as of cultural and social relevance. On the other hand, it intends to analyse the ways these kinds of representation are mediated by the Italian market, where promotional strategies tend to bend transgres- sion according to elements more appealing to the domestic audience.

Abstract

Focusing on the cases of The Deuce (HBO, 2017-19) and The End of the F***ing World (Netflix, 2018-), the current essay aims, on the one hand, at investigating the treatment of transgression and explicit content in two TV series that, in different ways, challenge the narrative and aesthetic canons of television representa- tion, as well as of cultural and social relevance. On the other hand, it intends to analyse the ways these kinds of representation are mediated by the Italian market, where promotional strategies tend to bend transgres- sion according to elements more appealing to the domestic audience.
