Analyzing two main important theories about the parental rights and the goods of parenting, the article contends that these approaches, as well as the criticisms addressed to them, can be useful applied to the rainbow families and not only to the heteronormative and nuclear family. In fact, homosexual par-ents’ desire to have a child is not different from that of heterosexual parents: the desire to have a child is only one. Desire has neither gender nor sexual orientation. But the ‘function’ that it plays in the two types of families is different. In the rainbow family, the symbolic desire of a future condition becomes an instrument to legitimize the same-sex parents family as the other families. Moreover, the desire es-tablishes the two parents (the two fathers or the two mothers) differentiating them from the donor.

Abstract: | Analyzing two main important theories about the parental rights and the goods of parenting, the article contends that these approaches, as well as the criticisms addressed to them, can be useful applied to the rainbow families and not only to the heteronormative and nuclear family. | |
