Analysis of a group of ceramics at the Civico Museo Medievale di Bologna, here recognized as búcaros de Indias, proceeding from the collection of Ferdinando Cospi. The article provides an overview of the use and consumption of búcaros de Indias in early modern Europe; it also explores the way in which Lorenzo Legati, author of the catalogue of the Museo Cospiano (1677), tackled the study of unknown material culture by means of a method which reveals a decidedly antiquarian mindset.
