In this paper, I would like to focus on the many heuristic values that research on open air schools, which began in the early Twentieth century, offers international scholars of the history of schooling and education, in terms of sources, interdisciplinary relations and new themes to explore at epistemological and methodological level. Furthermore, the research conducted so far has also revealed the need to preserve these sources from oblivion, offering them to civil society as a historical heritage of education, the expression of a collective school memory, which is also able to offer important elements regarding the historical dimension of outdoor education today.

Abstract
