For several years, one of the most common terms in the government world is “digitization”, and this concept is often used as a synonym for the word “dematerialization”. The report is conceptually divided into two parts. The first examines the problems of simplification and dematerialization of administrative processes, showing that not only the dematerialization of documentation leads to concrete and tangible results, as stated in the example presented in the second part, which is so paradoxically widespread in the public sector. The author analyzes the errors that usually occur at the initial stage of the project to simplify and dematerialize documents within the framework of the legal framework that was put into practice in August 2016 in Italy with special reference to the expression “goodbye, paper”. The second part of the report presents a project to simplify and dematerialize the processes of preparing and signing management documentation for the rector and executive officers of a university in Udine (Italy), the results of which have been successful due to the use of a document management system integrated into a management information system of documents.
