Abstract

n recent years, the new conservation challenge consists to preserve contemporary mural paintings by Graffiti vandal-ism or tagging. Contemporary mural pantings are complex artworks for several reasons, including the heterogeneous materials used, the variation of varnishes, the different types of substrate. YOCOCU Organisation YOuth in COnservation of CUltural Hertiage and M.U.Ro Museo di Urban Art di Roma are developing a scientific research to define the issues of long-term care and maintenance of mural paintings and to evaluate the performance of different categories of protective coatings on these artworks. In particular this work is focused on preliminar results related to: a) the study of the interaction of antigraffiti on synthetic varnishes used by MURo to realize its artworks; b) the testing of effectiveness and efficiency of commercial products used to antigraffiti (polysiloxane, fluor-inated acrylic, polyurethane, microcrystalline waxes and fluori-nated polymers); c) the definition of the best system to remove simulate vandalism spray without damaging the painting.Laboratory specimens were realized and data obtained by optical and electronic microscope and colorimetric spectrophotometer.
