Partial discharge detection in switchgears is discussed in this paper. The irradiation pattern of a cubicle is analyzed and measured to optimize PD sensors. Having achieved a satisfactory sensitivity, patterns of typical defects (internal, surface and corona) are acquired in order to show that, if efficient tools are used, PD source identification, which is the basis to implement cost-effective condition based maintenance practices, can be obtained.
