The meanings of the “Tabulae Affinitatum”, since the very first devised by E.F. Geoffroy (1718) are discussed in a context where, upon the influence of newtonian mechanics, alchemical formulations and ”iatrochemistry” were giving place to CHYMIA (as indicated in the Diderot-D’Alembert Encyclopedia, 1751-78). The efforts to rationalize the results of experiments transforming defined “substances” by using the theory of chemical affinity could be related to the systematic effort exploited one century later by Mendeleev, Newland, Meyer etc, to find the right place, in a sort of a matricial arrangement, to the known and unknown elements.

Abstract
The meanings of the “Tabulae Affinitatum”, since the very first devised by E.F. Geoffroy (1718) are discussed in a context where, upon the influence of newtonian mechanics, alchemical formulations and ”iatrochemistry” were giving place to CHYMIA (as indicated in the Diderot-D’Alembert Encyclopedia, 1751-78). The efforts to rationalize the results of experiments transforming defined “substances” by using the theory of chemical affinity could be related to the systematic effort exploited one century later by Mendeleev, Newland, Meyer etc, to find the right place, in a sort of a matricial arrangement, to the known and unknown elements.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
