This paper analyzes the factors leading incumbent firms to survive in presence of incomplete technological substitution, a regime characterized by the coexistence of established and new technologies. Empirically, we study the evolution of the Swiss watch industry that in the late Seventies experienced a shakeout caused by the emergence of the quartz technology. To assess the impact of incumbents’ technological competencies and market positioning on firm survival we adopt survival analysis.

Abstract
This paper analyzes the factors leading incumbent firms to survive in presence of incomplete technological substitution, a regime characterized by the coexistence of established and new technologies. Empirically, we study the evolution of the Swiss watch industry that in the late Seventies experienced a shakeout caused by the emergence of the quartz technology. To assess the impact of incumbents’ technological competencies and market positioning on firm survival we adopt survival analysis.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
