The paper deals with the lexicalization of the movement components in Russian and Italian. According to Leonard Talmy’s original typological classification, these two languages express the semantics of movement components in two different ways. Our research has mainly focused on the relationship between the Russian prefix vy- and its Italian correlates. Using a contrastive approach, we have tested our hypothesis that in contemporary Italian there is an increasing tendency to use hybrid constructions when the lexicalization of the movement situation is used. The paper presents the intermediate results of a comparative analysis of texts in three different languages: English, Russian and Italian. The source text for our corpus-based analysis is J.R.R. Tolkien’s novel The Hobbit, or There and Back Again (1937), together with its Russian (1976) and Italian (1989) translations. We have compiled a corpus that includes texts in three different languages to avoid linguistic interference while translating prefixed verbs from Russian into Italian. The intermediate results of our study confirm our hypothesis that in contemporary Italian there is a tendency to lexicalize the semantic component ʻpathʼ in adverbial particles, which approximately function as the Russian prefix vy-. A further stage of our research can lead to a new approach to teaching and learning Russian and Italian as foreign languages.

Abstract
A further stage of our research can lead to a new approach to teaching and learning Russian and Italian as foreign languages.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
