The debate around religion and identity in the Canadian context has received extra fuel thanks to the Ishaq v. Canada decision. Reversing the ministerial ban on niqab during citizenship ceremonies, the decision sets the stage for a deeper re ection on the variable and often problematic relationship between religion and identity. Equally thought- provoking is the role of the setting in which the debate arises: the citizenship oath, the of cial entrance of a new member into the «Canadian family».

Abstract

The debate around religion and identity in the Canadian context has received extra fuel thanks to the Ishaq v. Canada decision. Reversing the ministerial ban on niqab during citizenship ceremonies, the decision sets the stage for a deeper re ection on the variable and often problematic relationship between religion and identity. Equally thought- provoking is the role of the setting in which the debate arises: the citizenship oath, the of cial entrance of a new member into the «Canadian family».
