The paper raises the question of whether a distinctive approach to philosophy of science is likely to emerge in Europe. The present situation of philosophy of science is comparede with its situation in the days of the Vienna Circle. Like in the old days, European philosophy of science regards the dialogue between philosophers and scientists as indispensable. However, science is not the same: new fields are emerging, and philosophy of science should look at them with an open spirit. The new developments in the science of today call attention to the necessity to develop a new epistemology, making increasing use of probabilistic methods and models. A further distinctive feature of European epistemology lies with its historical concern, so that when a problem is addressed, this is done with an eye on the wider debate, past and present.

Abstract
The paper raises the question of whether a distinctive approach to philosophy of science is likely to emerge in Europe. The present situation of philosophy of science is comparede with its situation in the days of the Vienna Circle. Like in the old days, European philosophy of science regards the dialogue between philosophers and scientists as indispensable. However, science is not the same: new fields are emerging, and philosophy of science should look at them with an open spirit. The new developments in the science of today call attention to the necessity to develop a new epistemology, making increasing use of probabilistic methods and models. A further distinctive feature of European epistemology lies with its historical concern, so that when a problem is addressed, this is done with an eye on the wider debate, past and present.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
