In the oeuvre of Lucian of Samosata, “text” encounters “object” in many ways: embedded in prolaliai, dialogues and narrative texts there are ekphraseis of real objects, of fictional objects, and sometimes of real and fictional objects right next to each other. These (real or fictional) objects play a role in Lucian’s “autobiography”, in his rhetoric, and also in at least some of his entertaining narratives. The paper tries to give an idea of this “Protean” handling of objects within texts by the author.

Abstract

In the oeuvre of Lucian of Samosata, “text” encounters “object” in many ways: embedded in prolaliai, dialogues and narrative texts there are ekphraseis of real objects, of fictional objects, and sometimes of real and fictional objects right next to each other. These (real or fictional) objects play a role in Lucian’s “autobiography”, in his rhetoric, and also in at least some of his entertaining narratives. The paper tries to give an idea of this “Protean” handling of objects within texts by the author.
