In a companion paper, a practical procedure for the seismic design of building structures equipped with viscous dampers has been presented. In this paper, a design application of the procedure is developed with reference to a two-storey precast reinforced-concrete shopping mall building. The purpose of this application is twofold. The first goal is to verify the effectiveness of the proposed procedure in the identification of the mechanical characteristics of the viscous dampers (i.e. damping coefficient, damping exponent, …) which allow to achieve target levels of performances (i.e. reduction in seismic response with respect to structures with no additional damping system). The second goal is to verify the effectiveness of the use of viscous dampers for the seismic design of precast (non moment-resisting) building structures. Indeed, precast concrete structures (commonly assembled at construction site) are not capable of transmitting bending moments at joints and show a relatively large flexibility with respect to lateral seismic loads. The use of added viscous dampers is here investigated (with respect to traditional lateral-resisting bracing systems) in order to keep, at the same time, inter-storey drifts within the limitations imposed by seismic codes, and actions in the dissipative braces, in the structural elements and at foundation level within acceptable levels.
