Did the inventor of logic, Aristotle, have a notion of abduction? The inventor of abductive logic, Peirce, had a positive answer: the "apagoghe" of Prior Analytics B 25 is in fact an argument having the form of abduction, but there are good reasons to suspect that Peirce’s suggestion was mistaken. John Woods has dedicated much of his work to both Aristotle and abduction. In this paper I build upon an idea of Woods’ and give an abductive reading of some of the arguments discussed by Aristotle in his logical works, thus answering in the affirmative the question whether Aristotle had a notion of abduction.

Abstract
Did the inventor of logic, Aristotle, have a notion of abduction? The inventor of abductive logic, Peirce, had a positive answer: the "apagoghe" of Prior Analytics B 25 is in fact an argument having the form of abduction, but there are good reasons to suspect that Peirce’s suggestion was mistaken. John Woods has dedicated much of his work to both Aristotle and abduction. In this paper I build upon an idea of Woods’ and give an abductive reading of some of the arguments discussed by Aristotle in his logical works, thus answering in the affirmative the question whether Aristotle had a notion of abduction.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
