L'immagine, le migrazioni, la complessità. Logica e narrazioni per il mondo di oggi

Image, Migration, and Complexity: Logic and Narratives for Today’s World In this paper I aim to reconstruct, in the first place, some links between geography, image and geographical imagination which have not yet been explored. The first two issues which I tackle are the cultural construction of the West and an alternative narrative on migration. I aim at showing that the two issues are connected with each other not only because they are both imbued with geographical imagination, but especially because, a priori, they both deal with, and place at their core, the nature of image as Other. I argue that image, as Other, is the basis for a thought of complexity, because since Antiquity it has provided such a thought with a logic. In fact, the aim characterizing the whole article is the attempt to delineate a thought of complexity. This delineation involves the reinterpretation of two geographical models, chora and the landscape, which I regard as models of complexity inasmuch as they are founded on the interweaving of aesthetics and ethics, of the logic of image and the ethical narrative of human mobility; this is why they are models for thinking of today’s world.

Nel presente articolo intendo anzitutto ricostruire alcuni legami fra geografia, immagine e immaginazione geografica che ancora non erano stati indagati. Le prime due questioni che affronto sono la costruzione culturale dell’Occidente e una narrazione alternativa delle migrazioni. Intendo dimostrare che le due questioni sono connesse non solo perché sono storie profondamente intrise di immaginazione geografica, ma soprattutto, a priori, perché entrambe riguardano, pongono al centro, la natura dell’immagine in quanto Altro. Ritengo che l’immagine, nella sua natura di Altro, sia strumento per un pensiero della complessità, perché fin dall’antichità a tale pensiero ha fornito una logica. Tutto ciò che viene qui argomentato, infatti, è volto alla delineazione di un pensiero della complessità. Questa delineazione passa attraverso la reinterpretazione di due modelli geografici, la chora e il paesaggio, che io considero modelli di complessità nella misura in cui sono fondati sull’intreccio fra estetica ed etica, fra la logica dell’immagine e la narrazione etica della mobilità umana; e per questo sono modelli per pensare il mondo di oggi.
