The article points out, by analyzing unpublished, documentary fiscal source (Estimi of Bologna, 1296), the number of women (citizens) as taxpayers, and their role in the urban society and economy. Out of 9,940 fiscal declarations, 1,736 were made by women. The source studied makes it possible to know their familial connections and above all their fiscal capacity, and weight in the urban productive system. Not a few women were active in the small business and family lending. Furthermore some clues on the domestic labor market have also been identified. The extrapolated data from the source have been linked to a geo-referenced map (Historical GIS) to make it possible connection between people and urban space.
