The increasing frequency and intensity of forest fires within Europeancountries has led to the necessity of strengthening the European Union’s ability to deal with natural disasters. In order to provide an actual support to Member States, the EU Commission proposed to equip the EU with a reserve of civil protection assets able to assist Member States in responding to disasters called rescEU. In light of the particular legal status of the European Union, this article analyses the different possible types of EU governance of the aerial firefighting fleet as well as the different possible operation modalities options among which the EU could choose in order to own its aerial firefighting fleet. Furthermore, the article goes into depth on fleet’s registration issues in case of EU direct management of the fleet.
