Well known as the most relevant publisher during the second half of Eighteenth century Modena, Giovanni Montanari, doctor in utroque iure, was mainly a bookseller. Through his book catalogues (from the first one, published in 1769, to the second, broader one, 1770, never considered before this paper) Montanari, starting from Estense Capital, territory and institutions, extended his activity as far as other commercial and cultural Italian centers, like Bologna, Milan and Pavia, Genoa and Venice. Montanari was involved in cultural and political relationship with Modenese society and her intellectual circles, but was able to open his bibliographic proposal to a wider public, more extended than the one interested in his own editions.
