Democracy as a political regime – in broad terms understood as the rule of the many rather than the rule of the one or the few – has various meanings and is being used with a variety of adjectives (liberal democracy, constitutional democracy, radical democracy, direct democracy, and so on). Democracy can further be related to different, sometimes divergent dimensions of modern societies, that is, to institutional arrangements, to political values and principles, but also to a particular way of life. Democracy is in this an essentially contested concept.

Abstract
Democracy as a political regime – in broad terms understood as the rule of the many rather than the rule of the one or the few – has various meanings and is being used with a variety of adjectives (liberal democracy, constitutional democracy, radical democracy, direct democracy, and so on). Democracy can further be related to different, sometimes divergent dimensions of modern societies, that is, to institutional arrangements, to political values and principles, but also to a particular way of life. Democracy is in this an essentially contested concept.File in questo prodotto:
