Ultimately, it comes down to understanding architecture as a cultural phenomenon. Like every other kind, it can only be a complex phenomenon in which material and spiritual culture reflect one another. The essence lies in the materials – stone, wood, steel, and glass – but also in the impression or “Stimmung” which the substance is capable of eliciting in users of the artefact, and consequently, in the character of military architecture. However, character not only corresponds to the objective expression of a material reality but is intertwined with a populace’s expectations and imaginings. The best restorations of the Austrian forts of Trentino and the best projects are a long, refined and well-gauged work of exorcism, in which the psychoanalytical theme of the transmutation of their character is geared to reintegrating the architecture of the forts socially, functionally and psychologically among the ranks of those public buildings in which memory urbanely assumes the meaning of a reminiscence. One which strengthens a community’s sense of belonging to its own particular history, and that of tourists to history as a whole: from mourir to loisir.

Abstract
One which strengthens a community’s sense of belonging to its own particular history, and that of tourists to history as a whole: from mourir to loisir.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
