This chapter explores some of the devices that Joyce uses to make silence visible (or rather, audible) in his works. Several examples from Joyce’s works, including one of the Epiphanies, will be discussed to illustrate how this audible silence can unmask the concealment of, and distancing from, one of the great unspeakables of most human cultures – the idea of death. One final reflection will be devoted to Joyce’s occasional but determined silencing of the English language, which can be read as an attempt at reciprocating the English invaders’ erasure of the Irish language when they colonized Ireland.

Abstract
This chapter explores some of the devices that Joyce uses to make silence visible (or rather, audible) in his works. Several examples from Joyce’s works, including one of the Epiphanies, will be discussed to illustrate how this audible silence can unmask the concealment of, and distancing from, one of the great unspeakables of most human cultures – the idea of death. One final reflection will be devoted to Joyce’s occasional but determined silencing of the English language, which can be read as an attempt at reciprocating the English invaders’ erasure of the Irish language when they colonized Ireland.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
