The first textbook specifically devoted to the teaching of Spanish in the Italian university is Spagnolo, published in 1879 by Ernesto Monaci and Francesco D’Ovidio. This work is perfectly incorporated in the tradition of Spanish for Italian speakers, but its use as a “university grammar” distinguishes it from other traditional Spanish grammars due to a series of graphic, structural and content peculiarities that adapt it to the specificity of its audience. The identification, description and interpretation of these peculiarities are the object of study of this paper.

Abstract
The first textbook specifically devoted to the teaching of Spanish in the Italian university is Spagnolo, published in 1879 by Ernesto Monaci and Francesco D’Ovidio. This work is perfectly incorporated in the tradition of Spanish for Italian speakers, but its use as a “university grammar” distinguishes it from other traditional Spanish grammars due to a series of graphic, structural and content peculiarities that adapt it to the specificity of its audience. The identification, description and interpretation of these peculiarities are the object of study of this paper.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
