Recensione a Alexander Lee, "Humanism and Empire: the imperial Ideal in Fourteenth-Century Italy"

This book is the first systematic attempt to analyze the humanistic thought towards the Empire in the Fourteenth Century. The author rebuts the thesis that viewed humanists as the fiercest defenders of republicanism against the monarchy and tiranny embodied by the emperors, and shows how they often judged the Empire with favour and called for its help to solve the struggles within their cities and communes. Republicanism came to be the leading political thought for the humanists only from 1402, as Rupert of the Palatinate's expedition in Italy dramatically failed.

Il volume di Alexander Lee è il primo tentativo sistematico di analisi del pensiero politico degli umanisti trecenteschi nei riguardi dei loro rapporti con l'ideale imperiale. L'autore confuta la tesi secondo cui gli umanisti, nel Trecento, furono sempre garanti delle forme di governo repubblicane contro l'assolutismo impersonato dagli Imperatori, mostrando come nella maggior parte dei casi essi giudicassero favorevolmente il potere imperiale. La svolta repubblicana nel pensiero umanista avvenne infatti solo da dopo la fine della spedizione di Roberto del Palatinato, nel 1402.
