By dealing with the problem of the Latin variants of Ps. 87.8 in in psalm. 87.7 Augustine refers to the magni auctores Latinae eloquentiae in order to support ira as the better translation of θυμός than indignatio and furor, which are also be found in the ancient translations of the Psalter. The article aims to identify the magni auctores Latinae eloquentiae showing that ira as equivalent of θυμός goes back not only to Cicero but widely to a Platonic philosophical background.
