This essay focuses on the rationale behind Inquisizioni e memorie (‘Inquiries and Memories’), the first part of the second volume of Leonardo Sciascia’s complete works, edited by Paolo Squillacioti and published by Adelphi in Milan in 2014. A comparison of Sciascia’s La strega e il capitano and one of the Cronachette appearing in this volume illustrates the author’s debt to Manzoni and explores the relationship between history and fiction, this ‘investigative’ mode of narration indeed characterizing European and not just Italian fiction
