The versatility of the triazole chemistry was exploited to obtain mesoionic carbenes working as chelating or cyclometalating ligands for the preparation of three cationic and one neutral iridium(III) complexes. All complexes emit from 3MLCT or 3LC states. However, the cationic complexes display photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) around 1%, due to thermally accessible 3MC states. On the contrary, this nonradiative deactivation pathway is absent in the neutral complex, which shows PLQYs above 10%.

Abstract

The versatility of the triazole chemistry was exploited to obtain mesoionic carbenes working as chelating or cyclometalating ligands for the preparation of three cationic and one neutral iridium(III) complexes. All complexes emit from 3MLCT or 3LC states. However, the cationic complexes display photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) around 1%, due to thermally accessible 3MC states. On the contrary, this nonradiative deactivation pathway is absent in the neutral complex, which shows PLQYs above 10%.
