In dogs and cats with chronic enteropathies the endoscopic examination of the digestive tract (EEDT) is part of a diagnostic work up including not only the evaluation of signalment, past history, physical exam, clinical pathology and diagnostic imaging (particularly radiography and abdominal ultrasound), but also the response to dietary and therapeutic trials. This review describes the advantages and limitations of the EEDT, the instrumentation, the patient's preparation, the anesthesiological approach, the techniques for a correct endoscopic approach and biopsy collection, the normal and pathological macroscopic findings, detectable in small animals with chronic enteropathy during the endoscopic examination of duodenum, ileum, cecum and colon.
