The associations took on a growing role in bringing Italian immigrants in France closer to politics, between the two world wars. The dialectic between spontaneity and control permeating the associations led, at the end of the 1920s, to the prevalence of the forms of organization directly controlled by the forces that competed for gaining the consensus of the Italians. Fascism used associations as a tool to bring the Italians closer into his orbit, gaining appreciable results in the France of the entre-deux-guerres. Anti-Fascist organizations, especially Communist ones, sought to create recreational associations in the second half of the 1930s, offering non-militant associative forms, attentive to the cultural and social needs and the interests of the immigrants. The associations were an essential tool in building consensus and a major training ground for the politicization of many migrants.

Abstract

The associations took on a growing role in bringing Italian immigrants in France closer to politics, between the two world wars. The dialectic between spontaneity and control permeating the associations led, at the end of the 1920s, to the prevalence of the forms of organization directly controlled by the forces that competed for gaining the consensus of the Italians. The organizations that already existed were also persuaded to renounce their autonomy and to stand in support of one of the opposing forces.
