in recent years, the relationship between Pyongyang and Beijing has often shown remarkable alterations to the traditional assumption of being as close as "lips and teeth", originated by the former's disillusionment with North Korea's aggressive attitude and actions and the latter's growing awareness of China's criticism and gradual disinterest, elucidated by the constant participation to the international sanctions imposed against Pyongyang. Against this backdrop, even though Beijing strongly opposes the collapse of the North Korean regime, for the sake of its strategic interests, the relationship has underwent significant modifications, which pertain to two main dimensions: the first refers to the mutual mistrust that has gradually amplified, while the second to the different strategic interests that the two actors nurture in the international arena.
