The author attempts to explain why, since the publication of Tucci's works, comparatively little progress has been made in the scientific study of Tibetan art history considering the amount of scholars involved in it. Indeed Tucci's methodology has often been abandoned: most publications on the subject are by authors who do not know the Tibetan language and are unable to read inscriptions on art objects or relevant passages in original texts.

Abstract
