This paper aims to analyse the peculiarity of authorial philology in its ecdotic and interpretative aspects, showing some cases of representation of variants. “Diachronic” and “systemic” apparatuses are a specific tool to understand authorial way of writing, and particularly of XIX and XX century Italian Literature authors, from Manzoni to Elsa Morante, from Gadda to Bassani. A deep analysis of their corrections makes it possible to combine the analysis of lexical variants, the main focus of “critica delle varianti”, with the study of the “variant systems”, which enables a wider interpretation of syntactic variants, essential to understand the author’s style.
