The article analyses in details the second part of the standard PDF/A recently approved as ISO 19005-2:2011 Document management – Electronic document file format for long-term preservation – Part 2: Use of ISO 32000-1 (PDF/A-2). A special attention is dedicated to the reasons for its development, the level of compliance and the backward compatibility. As happened in the part 1, the criteria at the basis of this second part are connected to the acceptance of all the characteristics of the release 1.7 of the format which are not in contrast with the long-term preservation of electronic records
