Abstract

Review of the following book: Gioia Angeletti, Lord Byron and Discourses of Otherness. Scotland, Italy, and Femininity. Kilkerran: Humming Earth, 2012. Pp. 167. £ 14.95. ISBN 1846220386. Among the English Romantic poets, George Gordon Lord Byron (1788–1824), was the one whose life and art was most investigated and constantly questioned by his contemporary readers. Becoming a literary celebrity very early in his career and writing poetry also based on his eventful life – including his travels, sexual scandals, tumultuous personal relationships, and involvement with political events – resulted in the so-called “Byromania”. This term, coined by Byron’s wife Annabella Milbanke, indicated the obsessive and inexhaustible craze that surrounded the poet. And this is the starting point of Angeletti’s engaging study on the discourses of Otherness in the poet’s literary production.
