The topic of this dissertation is the belfry of San Michele Arcangelo church, in Novi di Modena, that suffered heavy damages during the earthquake of 2012. The subject has been first discussed as a Restauro Architettonico workshop’s theme, then as the topic of a university degree thesis. The bell tower study started with the architectural relief and historical research, even if the belfry is not accessible beyond the first floor. Subsequently, more information of the structure has been gathered by the analysis of cracks and damages, comparing it with isolated tower’s typical damage models, that explicitly refer to kinematics. Once the analysis phase has been completed, a finite element method model has been created and refined, in order to obtain the most accurate real tower bell behaviour. FEM model usage in modal dynamic analysis is allowed by DPCM 09.02.2011, paragraph 5.2.3., but only for towers, belfries and structures with a prevalent vertical development.
