OBJECTIVE: Osteopathic methods called pump techniques, developed and used in the United States, include the articular pump and the lymphatic pump. A similar technique called pompage technique, originally applied in the field of osteopathic medicine, was developed in France by M. Bienfait and afterwords was further revised. In spite of its widespread use, its alleged effectiveness is reported only in individual clinical experiences. This study aims to provide a narrative review of different pompage techniques applied to healthy subjects and to subjects with neuromusculoskeletal or visceral disorders. METHODS: This review summarizes the state of the art on the pompage technique in its various versions and shows the evidence of efficacy on posture, pain, physical function and quality of life. RESULTS: The effectiveness of the lymphatic pump was showed in pneumonia treatment and in preventative measures for post-surgical atelectasis. No randomized controlled trials (RCTs) investigated the pompage on the musculoskeletal system. CONCLUSION: The positive preliminary results opposed to the scarcity of studies concerning the pompage technique should encourage the production of more RCTs dealing with this topic.
OBIETTIVI: Le procedure osteopatiche denominate pump techniques, sviluppate e diffuse negli Stati Uniti, comprendono articular pump e lympathic pump.
