Two different interpreter-mediated communicative situations are analysed in this contribution with a view to highlight similarities and differences in the conversation structure and the verbal exchanges between the interlocutors: a face-to-face police interview and an emergency police telephone interaction. The sociolinguistic aspects of the two interaction and the effects of the limitations imposed on the participants by the exclusively acoustic input channel in telephone interpreting will be explored, based on the evaluation of communicative situations based on genuine legal interactions.
