Among the many examples of Etruscan manufacturing plants found in the Po Valley, unique testimonies are to be searched in the ancient town of Kainua (Marzabotto, near Bologna). The site gives a concrete example of the balance between urban area and manufacturing plants unlike any other. Over the course of time, researches have shown a complex production system. Some important and new testimonies have considerably changed the area allowing a deeper study of it. The big furnace for pottery and bricks of Regio II, Insula 1, is now tightly related to the needs of the sanctuary dedicated to Tinia. Other than that, the latest contribution to the study on the city productive organization comes from the recent excavations carried out in the Casa 1, Regio IV, Insula 2. The building complex, which life seems marked by a series of massive structural changes, indicates the progressive transition from residential to ever-increasing productive vocation area. The aspect of Casa 1, among other things, invites to a modification of the interpretive frameworks anchored to the traditional studies idea of “public” workshops as the furnace of Regio II, 1 and the foundry of Regio V, 5. Indeed, in the city big building complexes had a key role. They responded to both residential and production needs of the urban area and were complemented by smaller manufacturing domestic workshops. A more limited documentation comes from Bologna, that offers an interesting example of the drawing power of sacred areas in the attraction of manufacturing plants.
