A substantial body of research has identified a number of risk factors for relapse in first-episode psychosis (FEP), including non-adherence to medication, substance use disorder and poor pre-morbid adjustment (Alvarez-Jimenez et al., 2012). However, very few studies have investigated the association between diagnosis (i.e., affective vs. non-affective psychosis) and psychotic relapse (Alvarez-Jimenez et al., 2011; Wood et al., 2006) and, to date, it is unclear whether the type of psychosis moderates the impact of baseline characteristics on outcomes, i.e., whether some patient characteristics predict relapse differently in affective and non-affective psychosis.
