Environmental statistics offers numerous pointers to the possible narrowing of this divide: it is capable, in fact, of dealing with the problems of variability and uncertainty, of modelling special forms of dependence, of summarising complexity using indices governing the theoretical aspects of problems, and of taking account of the process of data production.
