Although more attention is now devoted to Grigor Magistros than in the past, many aspects of his character remain obscure. In this contribution I will attempt to investigate two particular issues, related to the two ends of Grigor Magistros’s life: his birth – or rather his ancestry – and his last days. The research draws largely from Magistros’s letters, which I studied for my Ph.D. thesis.
