This article offers an in-depth analysis of the mechanisms of influence exercised by the quality-of-justice discourse in the case of Italy. It proceeds to reconstruct the first wave of changes, which unfolded in the Italian justice system between 2001 and 2012, showing how and why they had redistributive effects. This is followed by an analysis of the second wave of reforms, showing how the new allocation of (soft and hard) power has started to influence judicial policy making and how the Italian justice system is still inclined to act as a catalyst of redistributive effects in terms of dispute settlements and the resolution of social and economic conflicts in Italy.
