The combination of safe drinking water and hygienic sanitation facilities is a precondition to the human rights and personal dignity of everyone. There are different appropriate and simple solutions to the decentralized management of excreta for poor area, that can be implemented to increase the proportion of people with access to basic sanitation. They are: Simple pit latrine that is one of the simplest and cheapest means of disposing of human wastes in low income countries; Ventilated improved pit and double pit (VIP) latrine, that have a pipe or a chimney connected to the pit to prevent odours; the Pour-flush latrine, adopted when water for the flushing is used; Compost toilet that allow the reuse of human excrement like compost in soil conditioner for plants and trees.
