There are two main reasons owing to which the University of Bologna decided to introduce Professor Giuliana Laschi for a Jean Monnet chair: one derives from her academic personal profile, and the other one is a territorial consideration. On the one hand, Professor Laschi’s post-university education is strongly based on European studies, as you can deduce from her C.V. Precisely, she completed her PhD program at the European University Institute, and she was a part of the research project on the History of the European Construction. In particular, professor Laschi inquired into this study as a Research Assistant. Thus, from 1987, History of the European Integration has been her own research field, as her publications can easily show. Seven years ago, she obtained a Jean Monnet module in History of the European Integration (assigned by the European Commission) at the Arts and Philosophy Faculty of the University of Florence, in which there was no course concerning European integration. In these years, professor Laschi has always been bound both to Jean Monnet action, and to the Academic Association of European Studies (AUSE), linked to the European Community Studies Association (ECSA). The chair is after all the crowning achievement of her long years of academic and research experience, dedicated to the European Union and to the continuation in such direction. On the other hand, the territorial motive is linked to her determined will of keeping alive a strong tradition of European studies in the Forlì campus of the University of Bologna (which, through “Punto Europa”, belongs to the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence of Bologna), assisted by courses of the Action. Besides, professor Laschi is actually Chairwoman in charge of the “Punto Europa” of Forlì (University of Bologna office, Scientific and Didactic Centre of Forlì), and she is a member of the Scientific Committee from its foundation (1999). In conclusion, a Jean Monnet chair could allow her to associate this net of experiences with Jean Monnet action and the whole studies on the Union at a European level in a easier way, as well as the activities carried out by the Punto Europa centre.
