The aim of this study was to monitor the presence of ectoparasites (arthropoda and mycetes) and piroplasms in fallow deer (Dama dama) of the Mesola Wood (Ferrara, Italy). Ten of the 72 deers examined were positive for yeast, while none for dematophytes. Ticks as Ixodes ricinus and Haemaphysalis concinna were found on the hosts and in the environment. Also ectoparasites as Lipoptena cervi and Trombicula (Neotrombicula) autumnalis were found. Microscopic examination of blood smears were negative, while PCR, performed on 35 blood samples, was positive in 21 (60%) subjects. Enzyme restriction and sequencing revealed that the genus Theileria was diffuse in this population.
